The Africa International Design Awards named the Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement project in Uganda, by Hassell and Localworks, Architectural Design of the Year 2026.
The choice matters. Design for refugee settlements is usually discussed in terms of logistics and emergency. Recognising it at the top of a design award places it in the same conversation as cultural buildings and private commissions — and asks what architecture owes to communities who did not choose where they live.
