Every October, Lagos turns towards the New Afrika Shrine. Felabration, the festival dedicated to the life and legacy of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, returns for a week from 12 to 18 October 2026.
The festival was conceived in 1998 by Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti, Fela's daughter, and is held during the week of his birthday, 15 October. Its home is the New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja.
The 2026 edition has been building up for weeks. An art competition took place on 1 October at the Kalakuta Museum, followed by a dance competition at the Shrine on 3 October and school debates on 7 October. The Dress Fela fashion show leads into the main week.
The programme reflects how far Fela's influence reaches beyond music, into fashion, political consciousness and cultural identity. Performances and creative activities fill the main week.
Yeni Kuti says the festival draws visitors from across the diaspora, with people from all over the world at the Shrine.
